Volvo Shows 5.0-liter V8 Engine for Australian V8 Supercar Championship

Back in April, Volvo revealed plans to develop new four-cylinder engines that “will turn V8 powerplants into dinosaurs”. They did come with a new four-potter for the XC60, S60 and V60 earlier this year, but they’re not through with V8 engines either, as they’ve just revealed the 5.0-liter V8 that will be powering their V8 Supercar Championship S60 next season.

Based on the production 4.4-liter V8 (B8444S) that used to motivate the S80 flagship and the XC90 SUV, the Polestar-modified mill features aluminum heads, eight throttle bodies, a coil-on-plug ignition and a 10:1 compression ratio. We’d love to provide you with some performance figures, but Volvo was careful enough not to release any.

"We have completed a number of high-rev simulations and long-distance runs and we're very happy with the figures and outcomes we've achieved. The next step is to fit the engine to the race car and continue the pre-season development timetable,” said Polestar managing director Christian Dahl.

Volvo will take on Holden, Ford Australia, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan in the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship.
