The new configuration stands for Compact Modular Architecture, and it will underpin all of the compact cars made by the Swedish brand. Among them is the XC40 compact crossover, which will be launched by 2018. Volvo has already shown a pair of concept cars, called Volvo 40.1 Concept and 40.2 Concept, to show the possibilities of the new platform.

Evidently, the Swedes have not gone too far when explaining what they will offer in the new range, but it is evident that plug-in hybrids will be present in the 40-series portfolio. Furthermore, the replacement of the current V40 will also get a successor based on that platform, which is expected to come to market between 2018 and 2020.

The next-generation Volvo V40 is reportedly being considered to receive at least one Polestar version. While the Polestar division has tweaked the current V40, the model we are writing about is being discussed as a hardcore hot-hatch.

Instead of just design elements, interior appointments, and minor mechanical changes, the Polestar version of the next-generation compact hatchback from Volvo is expected to be seriously competitive from a dynamic point of view.

The two concepts that have shown us what Volvo thinks it might design for the new 40 Series model range reveal a bold design, and it would be a shame if the company will not match it with a sporty version of at least one of the models in the range. While the compact sedan from Volvo might not get tuned by Polestar, the same cannot be said with certainty for the future XC40.

Along with the replacement of the V40, the XC40 might be available in a more dynamic version, which would cater to customers that want more than just a compact SUV with an attractive design. Do not expect it to break any records on the Nurburgring, but it might bring more people into Volvo dealerships, which is even better for the brand from many points of view.
