Volvo Launches S60 App

When thinking of the Volvo name, most of us will think of safety and sedans with big shoulder lines, but apparently the company has tinkered and dabbled with iPad applications. The Swedish carmaker has recently launching an app for the iPhone and iPad containing information about the new Volvo S60.

“Many customers use mobile phones and Internet tablets to search for information. Now we’re simply ensuring that we are where our customers are, opening a window into the company,”
says David Holecek, responsible for Volvo Cars’ digital strategy.

Basically, the user of the app can style a Volvo S60, watch videos, read news, find a Volvo dealer and order a test drive. Another distinctive feature included in the software is a search tool that uses the in-build GPS from the phone to find the quickest route to the nearest Volvo dealer.

You can also book a test drive online and also configure your own S60. A news function will be linked to the local-market site, offering access to the latest news from Volvo Cars. This software, along with one for the S80L for the Chinese market, is now available and additional apps will be presented this spring in conjunction with the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

“We’ve integrated a number of unique features, such as using the mobile phone’s built-in gyro to look around inside the car. If you turn the phone, the image viewed moves too, creating the impression that you’re actually sitting inside the car. In some countries, we already offer iPhone and Android apps that control the car’s heater for customers who subscribe to the Volvo On Call system, and we are also testing a digital instruction manual in the form of an app,” explains Holecek.
