Earlier this year, we reported that Derek Crabb, the Swedish manufacturer’s global powertrain numero uno, confirmed there’s a 1.5-liter three-pot turbo in development. Derek suggested that the new engine will be used by anything up to “mid-level XC SUVs.”
That translates to every Volvo currently in production up to the S60/V60 and probably the XC60, although some voices suggest there’s an XC40 in development as we speak. Nevertheless, the Scandinavian automaker has announced that the 1.5-liter Drive-E is currently testing and will offer up to a whopping 180 horsepower in its highest tune.

Remember the Ford Fiesta Red & Black special edition models presented back in June? Powered by the most powerful variant of the 1-liter EcoBoost mill, they both push an impressive 140 horsepower. Believe it or not, that’s better than the Bugatti Veyron’s 8-liter W16 quad-turbo engine in terms of horsepower-per-liter of displacement.

If Volvo does manage to squeeze 180 hp from the 1.5 Drive-E turbocharged three-cylinder without affecting reliability or frugality too much, then that would be very impressive. To put things into perspective, the 1.6-liter EcoBoost-powered Fiesta ST we tested boasted with 182 horsepower.

Michael Fleiss, Volvo’s VP of powertrain, explained that “the [1.5 Drive-E] engine is being developed primarily with our new CMA architecture in mind but will also provide power for our 60 Series cars thanks to Volvo’s advanced turbo technologies, while also meeting Euro 7 emission targets.” As a brief reminder, the CMA modular platform will complement the SPA and is going to underpin the all-new Volvo V40 in 2016 first.
