The Carole Nash Irish Motorbike and Scooter Show at the RDS, Dublin this weekend is the time and place chosen by Irish e-bike manufacturer Volt Motorcycles for introducing their latest creations to the world. Volt Motorcycles is an Irish manufacturer of electric bikes and scooters and is one of the rather few such enterprises which are completely independent and this only makes things even more interesting.
Volt’s star is the Volt 220, a bike whose design clearly speaks about its sport-natured character. However, if you’re expecting to see another Lightning, you’ll be a tad disappointed. The Volta 220 only comes with a top speed of 100 km/h (62 mph) and a range of 120 km (74 miles) per single charge in its standard trim.

Upgrades will also be available, but it looks like they will be in the battery department solely. The larger battery pack is said to maintain the top speed while expanding the range to 200 km (124 miles). Some speculated that the 220 figure refers to the range or top speed in km/h, but it looks like this is an indicator for the fact that the volt 220 can be recharged at home or at work using the common household outlets.

The Volt 220 is also said to tip the scales at only 115 kg (254 lb) and this should definitely make it fun and very agile. LED lights and ABS are standard, techcentral reports. Still no word on pricing, as the generic info is very scarce. Volt Motorcycles is also said to introduce the Volt 70, 80 scooters and the Volt 90 maxi scooter, plus a City 60 fun scoot.

“Most interest we have had so far is from the urban rider who wants a low running cost solution for their commute. When you consider that the average commute is around 20 kilometers a day and that an electric alternative that will cost less than €200 ($225) to run a year, it makes great financial sense. We are not looking to replace but to supplement riders’ experiences and save them money in the long run. Of course, we want to do all of this while keeping the motorcyclist experience exciting and fun as well,”
Volt CEO Colin Darby says.

“Anyone who purchases one of our bikes can see the advantages immediately. You have no more fuel, no oil and no exhaust, virtually eliminating all routine powertrain maintenance. In addition, there are no emissions so Volt riders will be contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment,” he concludes.
