A motorcycle engine in a sportscar? Ridiculous you say? Not for Volkswagen, who plans to develop a sportier version of their XL1 hybrid that will be powered by a Ducati 1199 Panigale engine.
Why go for an Italian engine? Well, Ducati is owned by Lamborghini, which, in turn, is owned by Audi, who is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. We bet it makes a lot more sense now.
Getting back to the car in question, Autorevue reports that VW has previewed the XL Sport project to a group of students at the Vienna University of Technology in Austria, saying it will be powered by the 1,198cc engine that motivates the Ducati 1199 Panigale (795 kg/1,755 lbs).
Volkswagen claims the 190 HP will be more than enough to push the 795 kg (1,755 lbs) into sportscar territory and says it will add a 2:1 reduction intermediate gear to its duel-clutch transmission. No word on launch or availability, but we have a feeling the XL Sport won't be more than a concept vehicle.
Speaking of which, VW's 261 miles per gallon XL1 hybrid has yet to become available to the public, but recent rumors claim the two-cylinder-engined vehicle will go on sale with a €110,000 price tag attached to it.
