Volkswagen To Fire 500 Workers at Chattanooga Plant
The facility is already running in overcapacity, making 170,000 cars per year, 20,000 more over the original plan. The plant runs on two 10-hours shifts from Monday to Saturday, being formed by two worker teams. The plan is to cut the employee number to form only two teams that will still be doing the same two shifts but only until Thursday of every week.
The total number lay-offs will count 500 workers, set to be completed by June 30th. Volkswagen said that another reason thay encourage the lay-offs is that the staff has gained enough experience from running overtime and cut-offs will make the process much more efficient.
