The prototype was spied while testing at the Nurburgring and on roads surrounding the famous circuit. The performance-oriented variant of the already sporty Golf GTI Clubsport wears the “S” suffix at the end of its name.

Two prototypes were spotted while testing at the famous German track. Both were undisguised and featured an “S” near the “Clubsport” badge on the hatch door, but the letter is covered in black tape.

While not visible in the photos in the extended gallery, our spy photographers informed us about the concealed letter, which they got to see before taking these pictures.

As you can see from the images, these cars have a partial roll cage in the rear, and also benefit from a high-performance braking system.

Aero and styling elements are also present, as you can notice the rear wing, side stickers, and the modifications applied to the front bumper.

Like Volkswagen usually does with the Golf GTI, the design is discreet and understated in comparison to what this car can achieve while in the right hands. After all, this vehicle is expected to have a 2.0-liter turbo engine which could provide around 290 HP.

Just like the Golf GTI Clubsport, Volkswagen will sell this version of the popular compact car to the public. For the time being, it is unclear whether the roll cage will be kept for the production version or it is just an extra safety element for the engineers on board. After all, handling a nearly 300-HP front-wheel-drive car on the Nurburgring is no easy task when you are driving it hard.

Volkswagen is expected to showcase the car during this year’s Worthersee event, Europe’s largest gathering of Volkswagen GTI owners and enthusiasts, scheduled in 11 days from now.

This year, the German hot hatch considered the forerunner of this class of cars is celebrating its 40th birthday. At the same time, the Worthersee event in Austria is organizing its 35th edition.
