While the precise dates are unclear, Volkswagen could stop making the Beetle by the end of 2018, and its successor could reach the market in 2020. The two-year hiatus would not be dedicated to the development of the next generation, but would help Volkswagen focus on more profitable products in its offer.

Once the German manufacturer dusts away the damage inflicted by the Dieselgate situation, the company will be ready to launch a new Beetle. The car will be based on the MQB platform, but voices suggested that the next Beetle will be available in electric attire as well, so VW will have to make a choice at some point regarding the destiny of this model.

Regardless of the decision that will set the fate of the next Beetle, Volkswagen will not target monster volumes with this product. Instead, it will be a niche product with reasonable sales figures. The age when the Beetle was the best selling model in the VW range is long gone, and nobody expects it to return.

However, the future Beetle could become a best-selling model if the car industry will be in a retro mood in 2020, as the MQB platform will have offset its costs by then, and the design of the Beetle might be what the doctor ordered for this brand. If VW launches an electric version of the Beetle, it could also be made on the MQB platform, which has been designed to support electrification.

Volkswagen’s Beetle currently sits on the Golf VI platform, but the next generation will probably employ the Golf VIII’s underpinnings. Since the Golf is already available as an EV, doing the same with the Beetle will not be a surprise, especially since some rumors have announced this possibility.

The only thing about this model, along with its electric version, is to be patient and keep your options open in the following years, because it will take some time until it arrives in showrooms.
