Volkswagen has released the first teaser photo and information for the e-Co-Motion concept van set to debut during the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.
Described as "the zero-emission delivery van of the future", the e-Co-Motion concept is said to be a more compact yet capable van, with 1,763 (800 kg) payload and 4.6 cubic meters in load volume. As the name clearly suggests, but also backed up by Volkswagen officials, the 4.5 meter long vehicle will be powered by a hybrid system or an electric motor.
"Electric mobility – especially in light commercial vehicles – could play a crucial role in meeting the growing transport needs of the world’s megacities,” explains Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Speaker of the Brand Board of Management. "Freight trains and conventional or hybrid-powered high-capacity lorries would deliver goods up to the city limits. Then, at transfer stations, smaller electric delivery vans would take over. Their predictable travel routes and fixed depots would simplify battery charging and equipment maintenance."
Though there's no official word from Volkswagen yet, the e-Co-Motion van might preview a smaller Transporter model.
