Volkswagen Leads European Fleet Sales

The largest car maker in Europe and at the same the biggest competition Toyota has for the number 1 spot in the world announced today the sales figures for the continent. The car maker says it managed to hold its position as leader of the fleet business on the five largest EU markets: Germany, France, UK, Spain and Italy.

“The Volkswagen Group has further extended its market leadership in Europe. Apart from the innovative product range, this success is attributable to professional market coverage by the Group, the brands and the importers in these countries,”
said Martin Jahn, head of Volkswagen Group Fleet International.

In all, the entire VW lineup performed great in this segment. The best selling bagde of the group remained the Volkswagen Golf, followed by the Volkswagen Passat and the Audi A4. In all, the group sold 408,419 units from the beginning of the year by September this year, an increase of 9.9 percent from the figure recorded for the same period of 2009 (371,691 units).

Talking about market share, the Volkswagen Group managed to maintain and even increase the slice of the pie it owns. Currently, Volkswagen holds 26 percent of the European fleet market, up from the 25.3 percent in 2009. With these figures in mind, Volkswagen may be confident of overtaking Toyota by 2018, the year when the German car maker plans to become No. 1.

The Volkswagen fleet division sells pretty much the entire lineup of models owned by the German brand (except for the luxury ones): Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, Skoda, SEAT and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
