Volkswagen Lamando Four-Door Coupe Officially Revealed in China

Volkswagen China has officially revealed a brand new car today at the Chengdu Auto Show. These brown car is, of course, the same one we showed you yesterday. Based on the very popular NMC Concept shown earlier this year, the company is now ready to sell a Jetta-sized CC model.

At a glance, this is a very nice car. Volkswagen are masters at doing a sort of imageless presentation that appeals to everybody and nobody at the same time. The Lamando, as this car is called in China, is like a blend between a Jetta, Passat and an Audi A3 sedan – crisp, but very Plain Jane. It's got LED everything, large alloy wheels and a sloping roof. But park it next to the CLA 250 AMG Sport and nobody will notice the VW badge.

Let's forget about badge snobbery for a second and focus on the mechanicals. Most reports we've been able to find suggest the four-door coupe is not actually based on an aging Jetta platform, but on the newer MQB that also underpins the award-winning Golf 7. Until we actually get a press statement from Germany, we're inclined towards skepticism on this subject, since Chinese cars are rarely up-to-date. The Shanghai-Volkswagen joint venture will take care of building the thing and plug the hole under the bonnet with either a 1.4 TSI or various outputs of the 2.0 TSI.

There won't be any manual gearboxes available, only DSG, nor will they offer 4Motion all-wheel drive like they do on the larger CC. Still, it's a nice-looking four-door that Volkswagen should consider offering in Europe and America.
