What started as an experiment with the Golf Mk2-based Golf Country is now a big selling point for Volkswagen. The latest crossover-like regular car from the Volkswagen stable to receive the high-riding treatment is the cross up!, which has been facelifted for the 2017 model year. Presently available to order from €14,250, the facelift didn’t change the cross up! as much as we’d hoped for.
At €14,250, the 2017 Volkswagen cross up! is a helluva lot more expensive than the run-of-the-mill up!, which starts from €9,850 in its domestic market. From the front, the most eye-catching detail of the car comes in the form of the distinctive bumper painted in a different color from the body. The headlights, however, resemble that of the rest of the freshened-up up! family.
Curious it may be, but the truth of the matter is that Volkswagen used a fascinating choice of words to describe the cross up!: “off-road suspension.” What the German manufacturer actually wants to tell you is that the cross up! sits 15 millimeters (0.6 inches) higher off the ground compared to the city car on which it’s based on. The offbeat styling cues are further enhanced by chromed fog lights and a set of 16-inch alloy wheels. Last, but certainly not least, anodized roof rails finish off what the facelift brings new to the table.
New for 2017, the cross up! adds three new exterior colors: savanna gold metallic, blueberry metallic, and coral red uni. As far as the cabin design is concerned, the 2017 Volkswagen cross up! comes as standard with leather upholstery, the upper side of the dashboard painted the same color as the exterior, fancy seat covers, and ambient lighting. Water is still wet, then.
Under the skin, the cross up! is available in three configurations: entry-level 1.0 MPI 75 PS and 5-speed manual, 1.0 MPI 75 PS and 5-speed automated manual, and 1.0 TSI 90 PS and 5-speed manual. The most economical of the lot is the base model, which returns 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers.
