After launching the CrossPolo, the CrossGolf and the CrossTouran, Volkswagen is considering launching a fourth Cross model that could be based on the latest iteration of the Passat. Not much is known about the car, as the guys over at the German carmaker haven't talked about such a project until now. However, a report by French publication L'Automobile Magazine reveals that a so-called CrossPassat is already in development and should arrive sometimes next year.
The car will basically be a taller Passat Estate, so it will come with a 20mm (0.7 inches) higher ground clearance as well as with enhanced suspensions. Roof bars will be offered as standard, as well as some other features specifically introduced for this last project.
The aforementioned source hints that the car might be only offered with two engine versions, the 2.0-liter TDI available in either 140 or 170 horsepower form. A third option, the V6 petrol with 300 horsepower might be offered as well, but only on the top-of-the-range trim levels.
Specifically designed to compete against the likes of Audi A4 Allroad, Saab 9-3X and Subaru Outback, the CrossPassat will most likely boast Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system as standard, as well as with several improvements over the 4Motion version of the regular Passat range.
Several refinements will make it to the interiors for more space and increased comfort. Pricing is obviously still an enigma for all of us, but it appears that the cheapest CrossPassat will be more expensive by around 1,500 Euros as compared to the equivalent 4Motion Passat flavor.
