Volkswagen Considers Making the World's Most Affordable Electric Car

Volkswagen could emerge from the shame it brought upon itself through the Dieselgate scandal with a car that might revolutionize the electric vehicle market.

According to a report, Volkswagen’s new CEO, Herbert Diess, has big plans in the field of electric cars. Dr. Herbert Diess is reportedly planning to build the world’s most affordable electric car, which will also have a range of over 300 kilometers (186 miles).

Currently, there’s no official word on the yet-unnamed model, but the vehicle is presumed to make its mark in the automotive industry just like the Beetle did when it first came out.

We do not know if Volkswagen will manage to deliver such a blow to the auto industry, but if there’s any truth in these reports quoted by the Australians at Motoring, the German company could make everyone forget about Dieselgate and buy its new electric car.

For the moment, nobody knows if Volkswagen’s planned electric car will be a sedan or a hatchback, but it is expected to bring unique styling and a better range than the e-Golf.

If Volkswagen were to make the world’s most affordable electric vehicle, we do not expect them to build a car larger than the Golf, since they could just use an upgraded battery pack to achieve a higher range without the need to extend the body to accommodate more batteries.

For now, all we discern is that the potential groundbreaking electric car from Volkswagen is many years away, as it will be based on the future platform of the next e-Golf.

The technical architecture is called MEB, and will not appear before 2018, the year in which the company will release the Golf 8.

Until then, we expect the Germans to develop their batteries for electric vehicles. However, first, Volkswagen must fix those pesky Dieselgate-affected vehicles, and there are millions to fix.
