Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its iconic Volkswagen California camper van at Techno Classica, an event scheduled from April 10th through the 14th.
Introduced in the late 1980s on the Volkswagen T3 platform, the California was built in about 100,000 examples over the past 25 years, also covering both the T4 and T5 generations of Wolfsburg-developed vans.

Inspired by the Westfalia-built custom Transporter-based camper vans, dubbed Jokers, which were unaffordable for the average customer, Volkswagen decided to create their entry-lever “motorhomes”. Thanks to its innovative pop-top that articulated at the rear, the California gained a unique appearance and became highly popular among camping enthusiasts. Despite its name, the Volkswagen California was never sold in the United States.

The latest California model to come from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the Beach Edition, which is based of course on the fifth-generation Transporter van, will be shown at the 2013 Techno Classica along with T3 and T4-built camper vans.
