Pickup trucks come in all shapes and sizes and from the US-built performance versions to the track-friendly Australian utes, there are plenty of performance beds to choose from.
Nevertheless, we are here today to show you one of the oddest go-fast pickup trucks we’ve seen in quite a while. We are talking about a 1960s VW Type 2 Double Cab.
The practical hippie’s machine is not exactly the quick kind, but the owner of this example has obviously watched a lot of Scooby Doo episodes, deciding to swap the air-cooled engine with a Scooby unit.
The Bus’s rear end now packs a 560 HP Subaru boxer and while we’re not sure of the other engine details, we’ve seen similar projects using 2.5-liter WRX blocks.
Of course, you could build performance air-cooled engines to stick to the original spirit, but that would imply higher costs and deliver questionable reliability. With the Subaru boxer though, the 500+ HP path is a well-known one that guarantees you’ll be able to drive your machine without too many worries.
In fact, we’re pretty sure the owner of this Bus is not exactly stressed. For one thing, the man managed to pull a 12.9s quarter mile, which means his VW is about as quick as a Challenger SRT 392.
Oh and when this Bus pulls a burnout to get in shape for the quarter mile runs, that Subaru engine will shake the entire structure all the way to the split windows up front.
