Volkswagen Beetle Turbo, Jetta GLI Get Power Boost
Fitted with the new Gen 3 powerplant, the Volkswagen Beetle Turbo coupe can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standing start in 6.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds less than the previous version. Also, the Jetta GLI is now a tenth faster with the manual transmission and two tenths quicker with the DSG automatic.
The new performance numbers are possible thanks to several improvements added to the engine, including a thinwall crankcase casting, smaller diameter main bearings, exhaust headers integrated into the cylinder head and lighter crankshaft with four counterweights instead of eight.
In addition, Volkswagen claims the new mill also provides improved fuel efficiency for the Beetle models of “between four and eight percent on the combined cycle and by up to nine percent on the city cycle”.
In other VW related news, the Beetle Turbo and Beetle Turbo Convertible will receive new R-Line bumpers with grained black surfaces and chrome-framed turn signals at the front and a diffuser at the back, while the Jetta GLI is upgraded with LED taillights on all three trims.
