Still waiting for the Russian car industry to provide him a new limousine, Russian President Vladimir Putin went to see the latest trends in the car industry at the 2013 Hannover Messe Industrie.
He was paying special interest to the Volkswagen stand there, where he was briefed by the automaker’s CEO Martin Winterkorn about VW’s vocational training program and innovative products manufactured in Russia.
After that, the Russian president accompanied by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, made a closer inspection of Volkswagen’s XL1 concept car, which promises to be the world’s most economical production car. Powered by a 47 hp (35 kW) two-cylinder 800cc TDI engine aided by a 27 hp (20 kW) electric motor, the car has an average fuel consumption of just 0.9 l/100 km (261 mpg US/313 mpg UK).
Apart from the XL1, Putin was also showing interest towards the VW Polo Sedan, a car which is developed especially for the Russian market.
