Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel battled it out, jostling for position, until the 22nd lap, when the Brit was forced to retire due to a gearbox failure, despite appearing to be ‘on top’ throughout the race. After Hamilton’s retirement, Vettel began to slowly pull away from Button, leaving the impression that he was in complete control of the situation, and race.
Pastor Maldonado had completed an excellent qualifying run, placing him second at the start of the race. He loses two positions right at the start, and after pitting, once the race was underway, he rejoined in 10th place, only to be ordered to retire due to a hydraulics problem. Worth noting, is Paul di Resta’s performance, as the Force India driver managed to get past Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, and up into 4th place.
Sixth and seventh places were reserved for the two Lotus drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean, achieving one of the poorest performances of the season. Worth mentioning is also Timo Glock’s 12th place finish, which enabled his team, Marussia, to move ahead of caterham in the general contructors’ standings.
After this race, Alonso is still ahead with 194 points, with Vettel in second place with 165 points and Raikkonen in thir place, with 149 points. Red Bull still leads the constructors’ standings, with a total of 298 points, being followed by Mercedes with 261 and Ferrari with 241.
