Venucia e30 Is a Nissan Leaf With a Runny Nose

Everybody knows the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, this 'Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable, Family car.' But did you know that the Japanese carmaker also does a China-only variant? Dubbed the Venucia e30 and built by Dongfeng, the Chinese spin-off of the Leaf looks more awkward because of a redesigned front bumper and a different charging port grille.

In other areas, changes over the original are kept to a minimum. Only Leaf owners might identify small visual changes with the rear bumper and reflectors, but the fact is that this is just a Nissan Leaf with a different badge. Though Dongfeng didn't say a word about the powertrain of the thing, we have a sneaking suspicion that there's a lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor under the skin, with 107 horsepower and 253 Nm (187 lb-ft) of torque on tap.

A certain detail is that Dongfeng Nissan is offering the Venucia e30 with two charging options: the standard system, as well as a quick-charge option that offers the vehicle up to 60 kilometers (37.2 miles) range on a five minute charge. In China, Dongfeng will sell the Venucia e30 in 9 cities at first: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Dalian, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Tianjin, Zhengzhou and Hangzhou, with prices starting from 267,800 yuans, translating to roughly $43,683 at current exchange rates.

Jun Seki, the president of Dongfeng Motor, declared: "With Nissan Global's advanced technology, sales experience and know-how of electric vehicle, the Venucia e30 has been locally developed through our careful studies about market situations and consumer needs in China. I am looking forward to seeing the Venucia e30 lead China's electric-vehicle market into the future and also to more development of new energy vehicles and the wide adoption of electric vehicles in China."

Dongfeng's director Susumu Uchikoshi added that "with the support from the local governments, local authorities, utility networks and many other stakeholders, we are poised to promote the use of electric vehicles across China for a more sustainable society. We believe that e30 will be the choice of many Chinese consumers."
