Scheduled to be released in 2012, the new convertible model from GM subsidiaries Opel and Vauxhall will forego the previous naming arrangement, as the model won’t actually be called an Astra, much like the VW Eos isn’t called a Golf, according to CAR Magazine.
In addition, the model will drop the hardtop configuration in favor of a retractable soft top that is lighter.
“This car demands a new name - it will look nothing like an Astra,” European design chief at GM, Mark Adams. “Next up in 2012 are a string of much fancier cars, new launches will change the perception people have of Vauxhall and Opel.”
When it does arrive on the European market, it will be greeted by similar versions of the Ford Focus, Renault Megane and Peugeot 307, plus that ever-popular Volkswagen Eos. With so many models available, the marketplace will be quite cramped, so Opel will have to step it up a notch if it ever hopes to make an impact.
