U.S. Experimental Vehicle Achieves 1,500 mpg

Nowadays, the automotive industry is on a strong pursuit of fuel efficiency, with the mpg figures becoming one of the strongest marketing instruments. Carmakers from all over the world are racing to develop new solutions that lower the vehicles’ carbon footprint.

As you could’ve imagined, the trend has made its way into the engineering nurseries, with more and more universities encouraging students to come up with new solutions in the field.

The latest development of this kind comes from the U.S., where a team of fresh graduates from the University of Ottawa have managed to create a vehicle that can travel 1,500 miles (2,414 km) using only one gallon of standard unleaded gasoline (3.79 liters), as ottawacitizen reports.

The car that managed to return a fuel consumption of 0.157 liters/100 km (in European language) took the second place at the SAE Supermileage Competition last month. The one person vehicle tips the scales at only 54 kilograms, is almost 3m long and can travel up to a speed of 31 mph (50 km/h).

Everything inside the engine uses existing technology,” said said Lihang Nong, one of the team leaders told the aforementioned source. “The way we put it all together is what shows what is really possible.

However, the students claim that it could have done much better, as Nong told ottawacitizen that the car’s performance during the aforementioned competition was heavily affected by a fuel leak issue.

The team plans to further enhance the vehicle and claims that it is capable of reaching 3,000 miles (4,800 km) for a single gallon of gas. The engineers will try to break the world record for fuel efficiency by traveling over 3,200 miles (5,150 km) on a gallon of gas.
