It looks like the patent photos of the upcoming small-displacement naked Yamaha have surfaced. The bike doesn't arrive as a surprise, as we've been, in fact, expecting it.
When Yamaha decided to make a bolder move in the small-displacement segment, the European and North American markets have been separated from the Asian ones, and the marketing plan said they would receive slightly different machines.
Customers in Asia would receive quarter-liter bikes, whereas the European and North American ones would get 300cc-class machines. Hence the R25 and MT-25 separation from the Yamaha R3 we showed you at EICMA last fall, and its naked version we're getting now, the MT-03.
If you look closely at these greyed out patent photos you can effortlessly spot the ABS rings on the bike, and this is a strong hint that we're dealing with the machine Europe and North America will get this year.
The MT-03 will sport the same 321cc parallel twin engine that moves the R3, producing a very usable 42 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 29.6 Nm (21.8 lb-ft) of torque ar 9,000 revs. We can also put our money on a 6-speed transmission and a more nimble feel, thanks to the smaller weight. The YZF-R3 tips the scales at 169 kg (373 lb) wet and ready to roll, so we can expect at least 5-8 kg (11-17 lb) less for the MT-03. Stay tuned, more to come.
