Unique Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Speciale Expected to Be Auctioned for Over $16 Million

The most expensive car ever sold is a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and it’s not a coincidence that the Italian brand is the one that claimed that title. If we’re to make a top 10 of the most expensive cars ever sold, Ferraris would claim five of those spots and, as I said, that’s not a coincidence.

However, you’ll soon learn that most of them come from the golden days of the Prancing Horse’s history and are usually over four decades old. That says a lot about how things evolved over the years and what makes people pay ludicrous amounts of money for what is basically just a car.

Another such model looks to make history these days and, according to its seller, it will most likely happen. We’re talking about what came out from the Ferrari factory as a 250GT SWB. The thing is, there’s a twist in its history.

You see, this car was lucky to be ordered by a man called Nuccio Bertone. Sounds familiar? You probably heard of his last name because of his father, Giovanni Bertone that founded Carrozzeria Bertone in 1912 somewhere in Turin, Italy.

As you probably know already, they used to design and build coaches for cars of that day and age. That’s how things worked back then, without any machines that would make 100 body parts per hour. Every single car was molded by a person, and every single one was unique.

Getting back to the story at hand here, Nuccio started working for his father and eventually replaced him at the helm of the company, breathing new life into it. Becoming a wealthy man, he found it suitable to order himself a car he always dreamed of: a Ferrari. His choice? The 250GT above SWB.

However, since he was a coachbuilder, he wanted his car to be a sort of business card. Therefore, with the help of a young designer that had just been employed at his factory, by the name of Giorgetto Giugiaro, he built what is now called a Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Speciale. And boy, did they hit a home run, or what?

Unveiled for the first time at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, the world was blown away by how it looked. Everything fit perfectly, from the body shape to the quilted leather inside, everything was just right. The media was blown away and that’s how this car’s history was written.

Of course, over the years, as Nuccio grew older, he had to sell the car as he was no longer able to drive it and it switched hands a couple of times before reaching the current owner, a collector from Mexico that restored it a couple of times over the last 30 years.

The end result can be admired in the photos below and, if you have anything between 14 and 16 million dollar bills, you can even have it as it will be put up for auction by Gooding & Company at Pebble Beach in August. That price tag will also allow it to enter the top 10 most expensive cars ever sold.
