UAE Becomes First in the Region to Consider Emergency in-Car Calls Technology

Starting with 2018, all cars made and sold in the EU must be fitted with the eCall technology. Dubai officials have recently announced they are also working on their fair share of emergency call features that will be implemented soon. The enhancement is part of the nation’s 2021 goal of zero road fatalities.

You’d better watch over world, Arabs are coming! It may seem like they’re all about expensive cars, flashy shopping malls and high skyscrapers, but UAE wants to prove something to the world. And we can’t but tip our hat for the country’s fast development in the recent years.

The latest expansion in the country’s plans for infrastructure development has been in the works for a couple of months now and should soon kick off. According to Emirates247, UAE is the first in the region to implement this initiative, which will automatically enable vehicles to call emergency services for help if an accident occurs.

It has proven that the infrastructure of the licensed mobile networks can accommodate innovative services such as the automatic eCall system,” said Majid Sultan Al Mesma, Acting Director General at the General Authority for Regulating the Telecommunications Sector (TRA).

Apparently, they have already tested the infrastructure allowing NavCert, the leading global eCall laboratory, to conduct an assessment testing the mobile networks operated by Etisalat and du. The survey covered more than 5,000 km (3,106 miles) of the UAE’s roads, including all seven Emirates, the Western Region and major highways. The results show the technology can be used.

For the successful implementation of eCall in the UAE, cooperation between the Ministry of Interior, vehicle manufacturers and the TRA is essential, making the integration of the system mandatory in all vehicles,” the program is detailed.

All these considered, we may be seeing the Arab country aligning with UE’s standards in terms of traffic safety even sooner than anyone expected. There’s still that privacy issue nobody has yet talked about, but we hope that will also be solved when the time comes.
