Toyota Teases Prius MPV

The Toyota Prius is a very popular car, as the vehicle’s sales have exceeded the 2 million unit mark at the end of last month. The vehicle, which was introduced in Japan in 1997 and entered other markets in 2000, is currently being marketed in over 70 countries.

Now that the car has reached its third generation, Toyota is planning to expand the Prius family, introducing a plug-in version and a Prius MPV.

And it is this people-carrying version that we are going to talk about. Toyota’s U.S. division recently introduced a billboard that teased a minivan based on the Prius and used the following tagline “The Prius family is getting a whole lot bigger.” The company has published a photo of the billboard on the Prius’s Facebook page.

We’re assuming that the “whole lot bigger” part is referring to the fact that the Prius range will grow from one to three models, rather that indicating the size of the upcoming Prius MPV. This is because, as you can see, the people carrier won’t be much larger than the current Prius.

Earlier media reports indicate that the Prius MPV will offer three rows of seats and be able to accommodate seven adults.

The vehicle is also expected to use the extra room under its floor (the vehicle comes with a higher roofline) to store an extra battery pack that will assist the current hybrid drivetrain. It is unclear yet if Toyota will offer the minivan as a plug-in or not.

The Prius MPV will come to the market next year.
