Apart from the Toyota Supra’s successor spawned from the FT-1 concept, Toyota is known for working with BMW over a joint-developed small sportscar.
The rumors are once again confirmed by a source close to Toyota that told Motoring.com.au the sportscar is indeed under development.

As the source says, “priced at around $16,000 (in the US), this entry-level sports coupe will slot into the lineup under the successful 86.”

Moreover, the source said that the car should be powered by a 1.5-liter hybrid and is set to show its face in 2017. The current 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain is currently fitted to the Toyota Yaris Hybrid and makes about 100 hp.

We don’t really know what to say about a sportscar with only 100 hp for 2017. Either the car will be as lightweight as a bag or maybe Toyota will borrow some of the Hybrid-R technology and will ramp up the total system’s power to around 160 hp.

Or maybe Toyota, as other Japanese automakers do now, has a thing for good-looking but not that powerful sportscars. See the 125 hp Honda CR-Z for example.

However, all I can see as a good budget Toyota sportscar for $16,000 with 100 hp is a Camatte57s (like the one above) with doors and maybe a roof.
