Two years have passed since the affordable Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S went on sale and over 100,000 units have been sold until now, making it one of the most successful sportscars created. However, if Toyota wants to keep selling this, it should better come with an updated version soon.
The car gone through several minor improvements in the past two years, especially the FR-S version which even gained a limited edition. However, none of them changed the way it runs or looks from the exterior. And we all know how many people complained that the 2-liter boxer needs a bit more than 200 ponies. It's not bad at all for going sideways, but when it comes to acceleration times, the FR-S/GT 86 can eat the dust from a pickup truck.

While nothing is known about what the next update will come with, we can say it will surely happen very soon, probably this year, according to chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.

With the occasion of his birthday, Toyota GT 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada thanked all fans that wished him kind messages on his Facebook page, and also said something very interesting regarding the automaker's newest sportscar, stating that “sports cars must be updated every year!” He also apologized for keeping 86 enthusiasts waiting so much and also promised to revamp the affordable sports coupe.

All we hope is that the new upgrade won't be just a cosmetic enhancement, with some new paint and rims. Everyone is crazy about having more power under that sleek hood and maybe fix the plastics inside a bit.

We think a turbo or supercharger can easily solve the power problem. Of course, this can be done with aftermarket parts, but there are people out there that don't want to loose the warranty, so a production version turbocharged version would be absolutely sweet.

Other than that, maybe some minor design tweaks here and there will make the GT 86/FR-S keep up with the market, while some softer plastics inside are surely not going to harm anyone.

Whatever Tada-san planned for the GT 86's fans we'll just have to wait a bit more. Stick with us for updates.
