Toyota Auris Hybrid at Frankfurt Auto Show

The Japanese automaker Toyota will finally unveil the hybrid version of the Auris at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 15. The concept will be named Auris HSD Hybrid and will be capable to cut emissions by 17 percent and raise fuel efficiency by as much as 19 percent. Because the future location to host production of the model was still an enigma some weeks ago, Toyota recently clarified this matter and announced that the Auris hybrid will be built at its factory near Derby, in the UK, starting mid-2010. Details on the Auris hybrid are yet to be unveiled but we're expecting more details in the upcoming weeks as we get closer to the official debut of the Frankfurt Auto Show. The model will arrive in European markets towards the middle of 2010, according to an official statement from Toyota in mid July. "With today's announcement, Toyota has taken a significant step forward in ensuring that full hybrids become more accessible to a wider range of customers," Tadashi Arashima,Toyota Europe CEO said. "Such efforts are crucial if we are to see more low-carbon vehicles on European roads." Rumors concerning a hybrid Auris first surfaced in April when the company revealed that it plans to make its product range a bit greener and launch hybrid versions of several of its models. Together with the Yaris, the Auris was the first model rumored to get a hybrid flavor, as the base platform allows the Japanese manufacturer to fit an electric motor. "The Auris platform was designed so it could also carry a hybrid system," Akihiko Otsuka, chief engineer of the redesigned, third-generation Toyota Prius, said in April. "By making it flexible, it can accommodate future overseas production and reduce costs." autoevolution will be attending the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of these vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions.
