This Hand-Made Bicycle Is Made Of Both Carbon Fiber and Wood

They make almost everything out of carbon fiber today; it’s the most popular advanced material used in any means of transportation. Formula One cars use it, hypercars and hybrid cars use it, and some people in the automotive industry claim it’s what most of the vehicles will be created from in the near future. But what if we’d combine that with good, old fashioned wood?

Carbon Wood Bikes is an Italian small company run by a father and son team that creates hand-crafted bicycles. According to designboom, everything from saddle and handlebar, to its frame and wheels, are designed and built by them. Since a wooden commuter would have been either too heavy or too fragile, the craftsman figured adding carbon to the layers of bent ash and mahogany will make it close to being perfect.

The result is a nine-kilogram beauty that could easily compete at art fairs. We totally agree with the wooden handlebars, but we can’t quite figure out does a person sit on a wooden saddle and actually ride the bicycle. A lot of questions remain unanswered, yet before we get to that part, we’d like to point out the looks are what clearly stand out instantly.

However, what happens with the safety issue engineers are currently trying to solve in a way or another? I mean, they are already considering building race cages around the rider exactly like they uses for actual cars. Volvo is looking at integrated systems that use GPS and sensors to prevail cars crashing with bicycles.

Autos are getting smaller and cleaner, but bicycles remain the most affordable and efficient way to commute in busy cities. However, if we ever want people to use it on a bigger scale we should first make sure they don’t just look good, but are also safe enough.
