Remember the post-war culture of the 1950s America which was strongly believing in nuclear energy that will be used in the future to power everything? They were kinda right; our toasters and washing machines don’t come yet with a nano nuclear powering unit, but we do have nuclear plants to create electricity for them and soon we might drive nuclear-powered cars.
With scientists now concentrating on improving battery life and capacity, a team of researchers at the University of Missouri have come up with a nuclear battery concept that could be used to power cars and spacecraft equipment.

Called the betavoiltaic nuclear battery, the cell uses a radioactive isotope going by the name of Strontium-90, which boosts electrochemical energy in a water-based solution. Then, a nanostructured titanium dioxide electrode coated in platinum converts energy into electrons.

“Betavoltaics, a battery technology that generates power from radiation, has been studied as an energy source since the 1950s,” said Jae W. Kwon, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and nuclear engineering in the College of Engineering at MU.

The scientists also said that “controlled nuclear technologies are not inherently dangerous” and most of us have such tech in our home and offices; the fire detectors and emergency exit signs being the most common.

Guess the nuclear post-apocalyptic scenario from the Fallout series might have some chances to come true. Just pray for a new Pip-Boy to be released by Google and start saving those Cola bottle caps.
