Once we learned that Volkswagen has begun selling the new Up! city car, we rushed straight to the German market configurator. Why? Because this car now has the only high-output turbocharged engine in the segment.
The Up! builder doesn't say "turbo" anywhere, which is kind of stupid. But we've managed to find the 90 horsepower engine available on the mid-grade Move Up! from €12,350. With a 5-speed manual, the only gearbox available, it gets the tiniest of Vdubs to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds as opposed to the 13.5 seconds of the 75 hp regular model. A sizable torque level of 160 Nm halps too.

The new turbo engine provides numbers that are similar to the old Lupo GTI. However, we suspect Volkswagen hasn't built a lot of fun into the car.

The rest of the Up! range continues to be powered by 60 and 75 PS versions of the 1-liter, 3-cylinder vacuum cleaner of an engine that can optionally be paired with a 5-speed automated manual gearbox.

Before the facelift, the Up! was available with more trim levels and versions than a Porsche 911. Now, it's down to just six, which we still think is too much. The highlight of the range is the Up! Beats edition which is priced from €13,150. It comes with an 8-channel amplifier, seven high-end speakers, two tweeters, two woofers, two broadband speakers and a subwoofer. Frankly, we don't know why you would want to listen to cool music in a tiny city car, but it's up to you to decide.

Around the middle of this summer, Volkswagen will start adding diversity to the car by re-introducing the 82 horsepower e-Up! that runs on electricity and the eco-up! powered by natural gas. On top of that, Volkswagen is for the first time offering the up! with a multifunction leather steering wheel, Pure Air Climatronic (automatic air conditioning) and reversing camera.
