Despite being based on the now-old M275 line of V12 engines from its predecessors, the new M277 V12 in the recently-launched Mercedes-Benz S 600 V222 is actually sporting enough modifications for the Stuttgart engineers to call it a new engine, with its own internal codename.
Sporting a cylinder displacement identical to the one from the S 65 AMG (5980 cc), the new twin-turbocharged twelve-cylinder is still relying on an indirect, multi-point injection system, but much of its internals are completely new.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the most important features of the new engine are:

  • All-aluminium crankcase
  • One-piece chain drive
  • Forged crankshaft in high-grade quenched and tempered steel
  • Modified forged pistons
  • New engine control unit
  • New dedicated ignition coil with twin-spark ignition
  • Cam follower
  • Two intake and one outlet valves (three-valve technology)
  • Hollow-stem outlet valves, filled with sodium
  • Low-temperature cooling-water circulation with separate expansion reservoir.

Combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission which includes a start/stop function as standard, the new Mercedes-Benz S 600 has a combined fuel consumption no less than 21 percent lower than that of its predecessor and is already Euro 6 compliant.

With no less than 530 hp and a massive 830 Nm (612 lb ft) of torque that is available in full from as low as 1900 rpm, the new M277 engine promises to deliver the most effortless type of “push” in the entire S-Class range, not taking into account the version found in the S 65 AMG.
