As I’m sure Tesla Motors fans already know, the Palo Alto-based company is working on a charging system that resembles a metal snake with a plug instead of a head. Before Tesla finishes the research & development for the creepy slitherer, owners of the Tesla Model S can put a $244 deposit on the wireless charger from Evatran, the outfit behind Plugless Power. First deliveries are slated for April.
Evatran offers wireless charging systems for the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, and Cadillac ELR, which are priced at $1,540, $1,260, and $1,940, respectively. Pricing for the Tesla Model S wireless charger isn’t available right now, but expect it to retail for nigh on $2,000. A word of warning for those people interested in purchasing the system - it only works for the rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model S. Evatran is adamant that a wireless charging system for all-wheel-drive D models will follow soon after.

“Our engineers are hard at work to bring Plugless to all Tesla models,” the company states on the product page for their newest wireless charging system. That said, what’s in the box? First of all, there’s a charging pad that can be wired into a 50-amp circuit. An adapter is the other major component. It goes under the car and a certified technician has to install it. That cost is included in the yet undisclosed price of the package.

Owners of the Tesla Model S sedan can charge their EVs by parking atop the pad. The system is capable of charging the equivalent of 20 miles (32 km) of range per hour. The 7.2 kW charger needs just under 10 hours to charge the Model S 70 kWh. The 85 kWh battery requires 12 hours for a full charge. The wireless charging system can operate indoors or outdoors, at temperatures ranging from 0 to 122 degrees F.

So what will it be? The wireless charging system made by Evatran or that creepy metal snake from Tesla?
