Tesla's Promised Mexico Supercharger Expansion Announced in a Weird Way

Earlier in April, during one of his famous Twitter storms, Elon Musk was asked whether Tesla will expand its Supercharger network over the border to the south. User Gonzalo Bolio asked "any superchargers in Mexico soon?" to which Musk simply replied "yes, coming this year."

"This year" is a pretty vague time reference, but it's still better than "yes, coming 2020," so the dialogue stopped at that. With stores already present in Mexico, it was only natural that Tesla buyers wanted to take advantage of the life-time free charging that comes with owning one of Musk's cars.

For all the good things you can say about Tesla as a company, it's not exactly famous for staying true to its word, so this "coming this year" must have been taken with a pinch of salt by Gonzalo and every other Mexican Tesla owner. However, their doubts have just been proven wrong by this unconventional method of announcing the country's first Supercharger station.

It looks like the chosen location is the parking lot of the Galerias Cuernavaca shopping center in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos. This means that the first Supercharger will be located some 50 miles (80 km) south of the country's capital and largest urban area, Mexico City. It also places the Supercharger outside the range of any similar stations in the US, so traveling from one country to another relying solely on Tesla's charging points for refueling is still impossible.

It looks like Tesla enjoys the idea of Easter Eggs, as instead of making an official announcement, it chose to shroud the building of the station in mystery. You could say it was hidden in plain view, as very large QR codes were placed on the walls of a certain section of said parking lot. When scaned with a smartphone, they directed straight to the Twitter message we talked about earlier. Subtle, and yet obvious. Go on, give it a try, scan the code and see for yourself.

The information has since been confirmed by Tesla (as reported by Teslarati), so it's not just some kid wanting to have fun. If it's true that the first cut is the deepest, then many more Supercharging stations should follow shortly in the coming years, making sure Mexico has the best possible coverage.
