As weird as it may sound, Tesla’s replacement program for its wall charger adapters has now become a recall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla will be replacing about 29,222 units of its NEMA 14-50 UMC adapters later this year in order to fix some issues that may cause the device to overheat.
“During charging, the adapter, cord, or wall outlet could overheat. An overheated adapter, cord, or wall receptacle, increases the risk of burn injury,” the NHTSA said in a statement.
Tesla has yet to announced a scheduled, but it will provide Model S owners with a software update that will detect unexpected fluctuations in the input power or higher resistance connections to the vehicle. Additionally, customers will also receive a replacement adapter with an internal thermal fuse.
Owners may contact Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
