Last week, Tesla launched the Powerwall battery, a home pack that should deliver sustainable energy storage. Deliveries will begin this summer, but that's not the reason you are reading this.

You are here because SolarCity is now taking orders for Elon Musk's latest innovation, but here's the thing: clients will have to pay an installed price tag of $5,000. And it's Jonathan Bass, SolarCity Spokesman saying it.

According to InsideEVs, for the 10 kWh Powerwall home battery, customers are given the possibility to prepay $5,000 for a nine-year lease plan. For this kind of money, buyers also get a maintenance agreement, an electrical inverter and control systems, besides the actual installation of the device.

As you might know, Tesla is also offering a 7 kWh variant of the Powerwall, for $3,000. This device is meant for daily cycle applications, but here's the intriguing part: SolarCity is not offering this option at this moment.

Why, you might ask? Well, that's because they think it doesn't integrate with rooftop solar needs, and therefore it does not make sense, financially speaking.

Nevertheless, this doesn't put into shadow Tesla's Powerwall in terms of technological know-how used by Elon Musk's company. For instance, the device offers 92 percent round-trip DC efficiency, 2.0 kW continuous and 3.3 kW peak power at 350 to 450 volts. Also, it can automatically charge itself when utility rates are low.

By doing as such, the battery stores enough electric energy to power your house in the evening or when a power outage strikes the neighbourhood. On that note, SolarCity will begin installations of Powerwall units this October, so it will be very interesting to see how many people are willing to adopt this game-changing solution.
