Tesla Motors is not planning to issue a voluntary recall over the three Model S four-door sedan that caught fire the past five weeks, Elon Musk said today, hinting that the California-based will wait for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate the incidents.
Speaking at the New York Times’ DealBook conference in New York, Musk said “there definitely won’t be a recall” and that some media reports about the fire were “extremely inaccurate and unreasonable”. “We’re about five times less likely to have a fire than an average gasoline car,” he added.
The three Model S fires occurred in Seattle, Mexico and Tennessee over the last five weeks. Each of the vehicles had their battery shield pierced by road debris. However, the drivers escaped unscathed and reported that the flames didn’t reach the cabin.
In related news, Tesla Motors announced it has opened its first dealership in the United Kingdom. The London Store will sell the four-door EV starting from £49,900.
