When one of the biggest investment banks around claims that the upcoming Model X will outsell the Model S luxury sedan and take the biggest pie of the premium SUV market, you know that something big is gonna happen when it will hit U.S. showrooms.
Expected to cost 5 to 10 percent more than the entry-level Tesla Model S 60 kWh, the Model X electric crossover represents a new chapter in the company's history. Although we can't put our finger on what the bankers from Morgan Stanley are forecasting to happen, we can draw conclusions about how the Model X will fare against its internal combustion rivals based on what we learned to date.

First thing's first, those cool gullwing doors we should refer as Falcon Wings. That's a feature you don't get in any other small, medium of full-size SUV, CUV, crossover, whatever. To be offered with either a 60 kWh battery or a more capable 85 kWh pack, the electric juice will power a very capable drivetrain. Both the entry-level and more upscale model benefit from a setup featuring two electric motors: one bolted on the front axle, the other one on the rear axle. That system is dubbed Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive.

The Palo Alto-based manufacturer is adamant that the Tesla Model X in Performance guise will be capable to accelerate "from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, outperforming the fastest SUVs and many sports cars." That really good considering that the new Range Rover Sport SVR, with its 5-liter supercharged V8 developing 560 horsepower, can to the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) run in just 4.5 seconds. It's even more impressive when you consider the Tesla Model X doesn’t use a drop of gasoline.

Expected to arrive in dealerships worldwide in early 2015, numerous people already dropped hefty deposits on the Model X. Tesla's website informs that "delivery estimate for new reservations is fall 2015." A certain report coming from Tesla Motors itself tells that Japanese customers are dropping a hefty $40,000 deposit to place an order for the Tesla Model X Signature edition, a limited run launch variant we believe will pack virtually every goodie in the options list and a few serialized plaques.
