We wouldn't say the falcon doors are half the appeal of the Tesla Model X - this is, after all, a lightning fast electric SUV with three rows of seats and a huge panoramic windshield - but they sure account for some of it.
Falcon doors are better than gullwing doors not because of some ornithological chart in which falcons sit higher than the fish-eating sea-gulls, but because instead of having just the one hinge at the top, they also come with an extra articulation in the middle. This allows them to open in very tight spaces almost as efficiently as a sliding door, but in a fashion that's about 198 times cooler.
And, rest assured, it's this wow-factor that convinces most people to buy the car, and not its more practical side. With the doors able to open in a variety of positions depending on their surroundings (or the weather, as they also come with a so-called "umbrella" function), the shape of the car can vary from one situation to another. However, one thing is clear: when the falcon doors are open, much like with any other car, the vehicle's dimensions will be different - i.e. greater.
That's something that most Tesla Model X owners didn't have to worry about as the car wouldn't move with the doors open, but it's all changed now. While some will greet this news with enthusiasm (it does make relocating the vehicle for easier access a lot simpler and quicker), others will probably wish it never happened. Well, at least this guy will.
Pictures of his P90D Model X surfaced on the wreckedexotics website, accompanied by a very short description: "Forgot that the door was open when driving out of own garage. Nobody hurt. Spotted at repair shop." You can almost sense the regret coming out of these two succinct phrases, but there's nothing he can do now buy fork out the money. Luckily for him, it looks like only one of the two doors was affected, but it's still close to one-quarter of the whole car.
On a sidenote, you don't have to own a falcon-winged Model X to be this stupid. Yours truly almost wrecked the tailgate of my hatchback in much the same manner, but luckily there was about half an inch to spare, and so pictures of my car didn't end up on the wreckedmundanevehicles.com website.
