Tesla Autopilot Goes Wrong, Near Crashes Occur Due to Ignorant Drivers

Try to remember the times when you were learning to walk. Most of us have a hard time bringing back such memories, but we’ve all fallen to the floor in the learning process. The same can be said about Tesla’s Autopilot feature, with the first videos of self-driving near crashes showing up on YouTube.

We are less than a week away from the introduction of Tesla's autonomous driving features, but at least two cases of dangerous situations have emerged.

Before you point your fingers at Tesla, we’ll remind you the carmaker explicitly warned consumers during the launch event and on their website. The EV maker explained the driver should keep his or her hands on the wheel at all times.

While truly driverless cars are still a few years away, Tesla Autopilot functions like the systems that airplane pilots use when conditions are clear. The driver is still responsible for, and ultimately in control of, the car. What's more, you always have intuitive access to the information your car is using to inform its actions,” a statement on the Tesla website reads.

Since we’re talking about a feature that’s still in its infancy (we’re not sure whether to use the beta testing tag or not), drivers being required to keep their hands on the wheel at all times only seems normal.

While other automakers have released self-driving features, Tesla’s one gives the vehicle the greatest degree of freedom.

Analysts have predicted that it will take about a decade for the technology, the legislation and the public opinion to be fully prepared for self-driving cars.

Nonetheless, Tesla aims to position itself at the core of the tech development in this field. Now that the carmaker has released the Autopilot software in the US, it has submitted a request to authorities in Europe and Asia. Elon Musk expects to receive the green light in a few weeks’ time.

Until that story unfolds, you can check out the pair of Autopilot dangerous moments below. The first clip shows a Model S veering into oncoming traffic, the second shows a Tesla heading towards the side of the road.

While toddlers are busy learning to walk, adults need to practice listening every once in a while.
