TEAM and Brammo Combine to Develop New Drivetrains

Drivetrains and transmission specialist TEAM Industries has entered in a strategic partnership with top-drawer electric motorcycle manufacturer Brammo. TEAM becomes an investor in Brammo’s operations, and the partnership is aimed at developing a new generation of electric drivetrains for the upcoming e-two-wheelers.

Brammo is one of the very few manufacturers of electric motorcycles which are offering a proper multi-speed transmission for its bikes. As opposed to the more natural feel the Brammo bikes provide the riders with, many of the electric bikes being currently manufactured rely on direct drive, single-speed transmissions. Brammo’s actual gear-box does indeed come as an extra bulk for the motorcycles and makes the maintenance costs (and chances of something going wrong) a tad higer, but riders jumping from bikes powered by internal combustion engines with traditional transmissions reported that the feeling is much better when one can actually shift gears.

The new drivetrains are not to be used exclusively in Brammo bikes, but will also be sold to third-party manufacturers, David Ricke TEAM’s president and CEO adds: "The electric vehicle market is a growth market, and TEAM and Brammo will be providing a wide range of solutions for OEM manufacturers. Brammo has developed motorcycle championship-winning EV technology, and we will be partnering with them to bring this technology to adjacent markets.”

One of the leading names in electric motorcycles, Brammo is getting more and more momentum, and it looks like the rumored IPO will take place “within the next one to three years,” as dealernews reports. Two years ago Polaris also became an investor in Brammo, with a $28 million (€20.6 mil) minority capital. Polaris has thus secured its access to Brammo’s EV powertrain, while the latter used the money to maintain the business in its home-state Oregon, despite the generous offers from other states, as Brammo’s CEO and founder Craig Bramscher says. Brammo has also recently announced the sales expansion to Canada.
