It’s no secret that the Toyobaru needs extra grunt in order to be a complete sportscar and the aftermarket world already offers solutions for this. Today we are here to show you the acceleration difference a supercharger kit makes and for this we’ve brought along some dashboard instrument battle footage.
A stock Subaru BRZ was compared to a Toyota GT 86 that had been played with by French specialist Monstaka. The tuner installed a supercharger kit that takes the Toyobaru to 400 hp (we’re talking PS here).
Before we go any further, we have to remind you that the Toyota GT 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S triplets have a rather poor WHP rating. Thus, the stock BRZ seen here may have an advertised 200 hp at the crank, but a dyno run revealed the sportscar only treats the tarmac with 145 wheel horsepower. As for the blown GT 86, this showed 305 WHP.
The two-liter boxer was gifted with a centrifugal supercharger, a HKS induction kit, a custom exhaust, as well as the obvious a bespoke ECU map.
Due to the standard (read: not super sticky) tires of the GT 86, the extra power doesn’t bring that much of an advantage when it comes to the take-off - there’s only so much the mechanical LSD can do.
Interestingly enough, the extra power doesn’t seem to make as much of a difference as we expected. Oh well, guess we’ll be heading back to “not quite a straight line performer” idea.
