Volvo is starting to grow wings under its new Chinese ownership, with the carmaker pushing the development pedal harder and harder. One of the most important upcoming models for the company is the V40 (this was called the “V30” until now), which is set to arrive next year and replace both the S40 and the V50, with our spy photographers capturing the vehicle’s prototype during a winter testing session.
Like we said last week, when we showed you a teaser of the vehicle, this will be designed to compete with vehicles like the new BMW 1-Series and the Audi A3 Sportback, as Volvo is planning to move upmarket.
Under the hood, we’ll probably get a mix of petrol and diesel four-cylinder units, as the carmaker wants to focus on downsized engines. Volvo´s CEO Stefan Jacoby was recently asked of the V40 would also replace the C30, answering that the latter is a three-door car, while the first will come with more than that, which should be a translation for a “no”.
However, the vehicle will appeal to a wide range of customers, as Volvo is expected to also release an XC40 crossover version, as well as an S40 sedan version destined for the Chinese market. The Volvo V40 is set to make its public debut in March 2012, at the Geneva Motor Show.
