Car design in the compact and subcompact segment is a really tricky business. Nowadays, you really can't get away with a simple design, you need curves, swoops, elongated elements and sculpted flanks.
Ford probably has one of the most controversial designs in the compact family hatch segment. The Focus just doesn't look good, be it from the front or the back.
However, Ford designers have done wonders with the Fiesta facelift and are working on a refresh of the Focus now. Prototypes have been testing for almost a year now, and these are the latest spyshots to show what they are doing.
The facelift will use a new grille design, trapezoidal and placed higher up, between the headlights. This will most likely be chromed to give a premium look. Gone are the two black triangle inserts from the lower bumper. They were designed to look like grilles, but served absolutely no purpose,
Our spy photographers have captured both the regular five-door hatchback and a Focus ST model while they were undergoing testing. The performance model has also adopted this new design, but its changes will be less obvious because it already had a trapezoidal grille placed high on the bumper.
New engines for the Focus will of course be very market-dependent. A 1.5 direct-injection petrol engine will be available in Asia regions, while for Europe they've prepared a 1-liter EcoBoost that bets 99 g/km.
