A long, long time ago, if you wanted a Mercedes estate, you got an E-Class and if you wanted a FWD hatchback you were told to see a Volkswagen dealer. But times have changed and Mercedes has never slowed down the pace of new car development.
Back in 2011, the B-Class was the first of a new generation of front-wheel drive Mercedes cars aimed unashamedly at the compact family car segment. A number of other cars followed based on the same UKL platform, culminating in the CLA four-door coupe. Now, Mercedes is also working on an estate version of that car, sitting somewhat in the B-Class' territory, but offering a lot more style.

Mercedes will call this car the CLA Shooting Brake. We've seen i once before, but these latest spyshots are taken up close and personal. Not surprisngly, the design is basically the same as the regular CLA four-door. Changes have primarily been made from the B-pillar back: slightly taller rear windows, added quarter glass and a spoiler on top of the boot lid.

As far as practicality is concerned, the trunk opening is a little awkward, but we'll put up with that since the taillights are so bold, dominating the hind quarters.

Engines will be the same as the normal CLA, culminating with the 360 PS hot AMG version. No word on US availability yet, but since Mercedes has no other UKL-based models sold there besides the CLA, things are looking good for the CLA.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
