Automakers have quite different approaches to making concepts. smart, for example, has more concepts than it has engines for its one and only car, while BMW rarely shows anything it doesn't want to put into production. This is the case with the eDrive X5 Concept the Germans unveiled earlier this year at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
Right after the new X5's sales debut, the engineers are moving forward with development of a production version of that concept. This will be the first BMW X5 to run on electricity delivering a whole new level of efficiency to the SUV market.

BMW did not reveal full details on the concept. But they did say the electric motor provides the X5 with 95 hp, allowing for an all-electric top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h) and zero-emissions range of 19 miles (30 km). The plug-in part is clear, but there will also be a normal gasoline engine, which we think could be a or 2-liter TwinPower Turbo which would explain why a 0 to 100 km/h time of under 7 seconds is being claimed. For comparison's sake, the 2014 X5 xDrive30d offers 6.9s to 100km/h thanks to a 258 hp diesel engine, so expect that sort of output.

The only other automaker to offer a similar setup is Porsche, with its new Panamera S eHybrid. But since the Cayenne version isn't ready yet, BMW could be the first to the electric punch.
