Back in 2009, BMW brought out the crossbreed between a 5-Series sedan and a crossover and called it the 5-Series Gran Turismo. Soon, the automaker will have another Gran Tursmo model in the form of 3-Series, so papa-GT needs to freshen up a bit to make sure it doesn’t show it age.
A prototype for the 5-Series Gran Turismo was spotted by our our men with long lenses with camouflaged front and rear. This would indicate a facelift, or as BMW calls it a Life Cycle Impulse, version of the 5er GT is on the way, likely to debut next year, either the NAIAS in January of Geneva in March.
At the front, the changes are actually minimal, with some changes to the lower grilles and intakes. Round the back, the boot’s shape and the graphics of the taillights are going to change. Down the side, there isn’t anything new except for the fact that the indicators have been removed.
But while the original 5er GT made its debut with a new 3-liter twin-scroll turbo in 2009, this new version seems to come with some sort of downsized three- or four-cylinder motor judging by the tiny exhaust.
BMW has suggested that the new 5 Series GT could replace the 5 Series Touring in North American, due to slow sales there. This could be its chance!
