The Germans used to think that their models should never compete with each other or attract the same customers. The 3 Series was for middle management, the 5 Series for top management and the 7 for the CEO. That conception has gone out the window now and a hugely diverse market has opened up.
Audi turned the A4 sedan into a coupe only to turn that coupe into a sedan again, the A5 Sportback. In a similar way, BMW has just released the first ever 4 Series Coupe based on the 3 Series and will soon also launch a four-door version called the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The simplest way to explain this car would be to say that it's a little bit wider, a little bit better looking and sportier than your regular 3 Series.

Ahead of the model's expected debut, we have fresh spyshots of the new 4er, including some of the interior. The test prototype was stuck behind a lorry at a junction, allowing our spy photographers to get up close and scoop the interior.

The car has a manual gearbox, which together with that single exhaust indicates this is an entry-level model like the 420i or 420d. Of course, there will be a number of other four- and six-cylinder engines leading up to an probably M4 Gran Coupe model.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
